MEFA: Khalil Gibran's The Prophet

[FIN] Khalil Gibran's The Prophet on yhdysvaltalainen animaatioelokuva, joka perustuu Khalil Gibranin vuonna 1923 julkaistuun maailmankuuluun runokirjaan Profeettaan.

[ENG] Written and directed by Roger Allers (The Lion King), produced by Salma Hayek and starring Liam Neeson, Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet is an animated feature based on the best-selling volume of poetry by the by Lebanese-American author Khalil Gibran.

The story of the movie is revolving around three main characters, a rebellious girl, her mother and a poet in exile with a mind so free that has maintained peace and wisdom even though in physical imprisonment. Just as in the book, the details of the setting of the story are blurred so that the time and place become irrelevant, thus giving way for the portrayal of the present of the characters, their spiritual journeys and the messages that they aim to send across.

Although at first sight Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet might seem like a pleasant cartoon, this piece is more then just a nice story. The inspiring figure of the poet paints the landscapes of the movie through eight poems interwoven in his path towards liberation from exile. Each of the topics including children, eating, drinking, freedom, marriage, work, love and death are visually represented by a mesmerising animation from one of the many world known animators in their own specific styles of expression. Through dialogues, songs and imaginative landscapes one will discover many spiritual treasures such as “Work is love made visible” or “Your children are not your children, they are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself”, an experience pleasurable for children, adults and film enthusiasts.

Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet is the opening film of the MEFA Festival and the Finnish premiere.
